Self-made millionaire Nick Foley becomes a foster father to a group of orphan girls in a clever dramedy (with lots of music) set in 1961 Los Angeles. The series incorporated singing and dancing into the plotlines as the girls dealt with everyday problems and reacted to various world events. Foley's brood included teens Rose, Marva, Diane and Patty, and 7-year-old Mickey.

Rags to riches refers to any situation in which a person rises from poverty to wealth, and in some cases from absolute obscurity to heights of fame—sometimes instantly. This is a common archetype in literature and popular culture (for example, the writings of Horatio Alger, Jr. and recently J. K. Rowling).
